BEIRUT: The Safe Building Alliance Monday called on investors and real estate companies to ensure that construction work complies with safety codes while stressing the need to preserve Lebanon’s architectural heritage.
In a statement, the Alliance said that despite recent signs of improvement in the construction sector, future projects must remain vigilant regarding public safety.
It also warned that “some investors and real estate companies began to negotiate with the owners of buildings of a historic or archeological character, particularly in Beirut, to purchase and demolish them for new skyscrapers.”
The Alliance said the solution lies in a “comprehensive urban plan” that would include the rehabilitation of low income areas in cities that lack the minimum standards of public safety.
The plan would also encourage investors and real estate companies to build outside cities to encourage balanced development throughout various regions.
The Alliance called on "every citizen to stand in the face of any attempt to demolish buildings that store collective memory.”
