Aoun, Geagea meeting achievable: Kanaan

BEIRUT: A meeting between Lebanon’s rival Christian leaders Samir Geagea and Michel Aoun is now achievable, said MP Ibrahim Kanaan.

“The bilateral meeting between the two men has become possible, even though no date has yet been set,” said Kanaan, from Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement.

"There is a communication path with the Lebanese Forces in pursuit of a common vision about the core issues regarding the stalled presidential election and the general situation in Lebanon,” Kanaan told a local radio station.

“Whatever the differences and rivalry between the Christian parties, it is important not to wrangle over constitutional rights,” he added.

Kanaan said the FPM hopes to reach a “joint work ground to organize the relations, given that the Lebanese Forces and the FPM enjoy the largest Christian representation with different proportions.”

The two parties are working on holding a meeting between Geagea and Aoun in a bid to end the presidential impasse, now in its seventh month.

Hezbollah sheikhs in Christmas tour of south Lebanon churches

BEIRUT: Hezbollah delegations toured several churches in southern Lebanon Thursday to wish Christians a merry Christmas.

The first delegation, headed by Sheikh Ahmad Mrad, arrived at the Greek Orthodox Church in Tyre at the start of their tour, where they offered Christmas greetings to Archimandrite Jack Khalil.

Next, the same delegation visited the Catholic Church. Bishop Michael Abrass thanked the delegation for the well-wishes offered by Hezbollah on Christmas.

“We hope this country would be blessed with more love, harmony and convergence in order to build a nation that expects a lot from us,” Mrad said.

The tour ended at the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of the Seas, where Bishop Shukrallah al-Haj thanked Hezbollah for its support “of this church and of this country where a display of Christian-Muslim unity is always seen during joint holidays.”

A second Hezbollah delegation headed by Sheikh Zeid Daher made a similar tour of churches in the southern port city of Sidon.

Daher also visited MP Michel Moussa, of Speaker Nabih Berri's Development and Liberation bloc, at his residence in Maghdousheh, southeast of Sidon.

Hostage families congratulate Arsal sheikh on son's release

BEIRUT: The families of the Lebanon's captive soldiers and policemen visited Thursday prominent Salafist sheikh Mustafa Hujeiri in the northeastern town of Arsal to congratulate him on the release of his son, media reports said.

The reports said the families were also determined to discuss the hostage crisis with Hujeiri, a former mediator between Lebanese government and the jihadis holding the captives on Arsal’s outskirts.

Baraa Hujeiri, the 17-year-old son of Sheikh Mustafa Hujeiri, was released late-Wednesday after his family paid a LL6 million ($4,000) bail.

He had been in jail for three months after being accused of transporting weapons and participating in clashes with the Lebanese Army.

Mustafa Hujeiri is also wanted by police over terror links. He was charged earlier this year with belonging to the Nusra Front.

But Hujeiri has also been credited with helping postpone the killing of captive servicemen, and the families of the hostages have expressed gratitude to him over his efforts to negotiate with the captors.

Nusra and ISIS are still holding around 25 Army soldiers and policemen abducted during a 5-day battle with the Army in Arsal more than four months ago.

The jihadis originally abducted more than 30, but eight have since been released, and four killed.

South Lebanon sheikh urges Muslims not to buy children Christmas presents

BEIRUT: Muslims must understand that Christmas and New Year’s Eve are exclusively Christian holidays, a south Lebanon sheikh said Thursday, urging Muslim parents to resist temptations and pressure to buy their children Christmas gifts.

“Some Muslims make a mistake by erecting a Christmas tree in their homes and dressing up their children in ‘Santa Claus’ outfits,” Sheikh Hussam al-Ilani, the imam at Ghufran Mosque in Sidon, said in a Christmas day statement.

“They even take it further by visiting the toy store and buying gifts and asking the shop’s owner to send ‘Santa Claus’ to their homes to give the gifts to their children,” he added, making a point of writing "Santa Claus" inside quotes.

Those parents believe that celebrating Christmas is a way of achieving national unity, he added, but they are wrong.

“Christmas and New Year's are for Christians and not Muslims,” Ilani insisted.

“This is not extremism. It’s what all Muslims and Christians must know and understand.”

Gunmen rob east Lebanon pharmacy

BEIRUT: Gunmen robbed a pharmacy in eastern Lebanon Thursday, making off with about $1,300 after firing their weapons to intimidate the pharmacist, media reports said.

Three men with pistols stepped out of a white Mercedes, entered Hussein Sahili’s pharmacy in the Zahle village of Torbol, and forced the victim to hand over LL2 million ($1,322) from the register.

The reports highlighted that the robbers fired their guns more than once to frighten the pharmacist and discourage him from resisting.

Meanwhile, the National News Agency said the Army arrested in Sidon two men suspected of robbing a pharmacy Monday near the southern city’s Serail.

A security source told The Daily Star that one of the suspects was arrested in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp Wednesday, and that the search for his two partners was ongoing.
