Gemayel congratulates Egypt’s Sisi on election win

BEIRUT: Kataeb Party leader Amine Gemayel congratulated Sunday Egypt’s President-elect Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on his victory in last week's presidential election.

In his cable to the Egyptian president-elect, Gemayel voiced confidence that Sisi “would lead Egypt to the civil state that preserves democracies and human rights to the different factions of the Egyptian people.”

“Egypt will practice its role as a prominent power in the region and a safety valve for the Arab world,” Gemayel said in his message.

Ex-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi scored a crushing presidential election triumph Friday, gaining 96 percent of the votes from the 21 million Egyptians who took part in the election.

Prior to his election to the presidency, Sisi served as Egypt’s defense minister.

He came to power almost one year after the Egyptian army toppled former President Mohammad Morsi.
