BEIRUT: Amal Movement MP Hani Qobeisi called on the public schools teachers to back off their decision to boycott the official exams and find another way to achieve their demands.
“If you have problem, it is with the Lebanese state over your demands; do not take this problem to the citizen waiting eagerly for his son’s results in the official exams and who wants his child promoted from high school to the university,” Qobeisi said, addressing the Union Coordination Committee.
“Do not spread the problem in another direction, and we advise you not to boycott the official exams,” he said.
Teachers have vowed to boycott monitoring and correcting the exams in protest of Parliament's failure to pass the long-awaited public sector wage hike.
The move came after a legislative session on the draft law was postponed Tuesday for another two weeks after several MPs failed to attend, thwarting a quorum.
As a result, Speaker Nabih Berri postponed the debate until June 10, three days after Grade 9 official exams are scheduled to start.
Lebanese students need to pass the official exams organized by the Education Ministry to obtain the baccalaureate and be admitted to university. They also need the Brevet certificate to be promoted from the intermediate level to high school.
Qobeisi said the demands of the UCC were just but that the civil servants should not “move the problem to citizens who are supporting the committee’s demands.”
He called on civil servants to express their demands more smoothly through their sit-ins and clear stances and by trying to win the sympathy of the public.
“We will be with you when you express yourselves this way,” he said.
The UCC have been holding protests that have already affected the academic year for students and at times brought the government offices to standstill.
