Senior Iranian official in Lebanon to participate in Hezbollah ceremony

BEIRUT: Senior Iranian official Alaeddin Boroujerdi arrived in Lebanon Thursday ahead of a ceremony that Hezbollah will hold Friday to honor its members killed in an Israeli strike in Syria’s Golan Heights last Sunday.

“We are proud of our martyrs who fell in the Qunaitra attack, and we offer both our congratulations and condolences for [Hezbollah Chief Sayyed Hassan] Nasrallah and the families of the martyrs,” Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian parliamentary committee for national security and foreign policy, said upon arriving at Rafic Hariri International Airport.

Nasrallah is expected to give a speech at Friday’s ceremony outlining Hezbollah’s views on the aftermath of its Shebaa Farms operation against the Israeli army Wednesday.

The attack on an Israeli convoy killed two soldiers and was carried out by the “Qunaitra Martyrs unit” in retaliation for the Jan. 18 strike that killed six Hezbollah members and an Iranian general.

“There is no doubt that the path that the Islamic Resistance has chosen to fight the enemy is the sacred one, and we are committed to supporting it,” Boroujerdi said, praising Hezbollah’s retaliatory move.

He had warned in a speech responding the Israeli strike last week that Hezbollah’s retaliation to the “Zionist air attack will be severe.”

Boroujerdi said Iran was happy to see “consensus between the political factions” in Lebanon and was hopeful that a peaceful political solution would be reached in Syria.

“We hope that the countries who contributed to the bloodshed in Syria would refrain and help end this crisis,” he said.

Boroujerdi’s last visit to Lebanon was in September 2013 during heightened tensions following the use of chemical weapons in Syria. He spoke with Lebanese officials, including Nasrallah, about the airstrikes that were being threatened by the U.S. and others in response.
