Judge orders temporary closure of Kfar Derian pub after Nawfal murder

BEIRUT: Mount Lebanon Investigative Judge Peter Germanos ordered the temporary closure of a Kfar Debian pub Thursday, almost one month after a bar brawl lead to the murder of 27-year-old Yves Nawfal, judicial sources said.

Powder, a popular pub in Kfar Debian, was ordered to close for a period of three months because of the “owner’s inability to impose security,” the source said. The judge has also deemed the pub's name a “violation of public order” since it alludes to drug abuse.

The decision comes almost a month after Nawfal became embroiled in a brief fistfight with other customers over an offhand comment made to a woman.

Following the spat, one of the suspected attackers, Charbel Khalil, ordered his associates not to let Nawfal get to Beirut alive.

Nawfal succumbed to wounds incurred when gunmen opened fire at his vehicle, shortly after the attack.

Earlier Wednesday, Germanos issued an indictment against the three detained suspects Charbel G. Khalil, Charbel C. Khalil, Juliano Saadeh, as well as three fugitive members of the Khalil family named Christian, Elie and Mario that are accused of involvement in Nawfal’s murder.

The source said that 23 people have been indicted in the case, including 13 who are already in custody and 10 who have yet to be apprehended.

Germanos recommended the death penalty for six, and sentences ranging from three to 20 years for the others, the source explained. The judge referred the case to the criminal court in Baabda.
