BEIRUT: Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb said in an interview to be published Monday that he would work for all the Lebanese if elected president.
“I have a presidential program since 2008, and the duties of a president are to be a supporter of dialogue and a link between all the Lebanese,” Harb told Al-Liwaa daily.
“A strong president is not only strong by the number of lawmakers or soldiers he has but with his vision and ethics,” Harb said. “If I am elected president, I will be in service of all the Lebanese and not just the March 4 coalition."
Harb criticized Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun and blamed him for the presidential void Lebanon has experienced since May 25.
“Michel Aoun’s insistence on the formula of 'either I am president or no one else is' obstructed the presidential election and the country and the Christians,” he said.
Harb said that the vacuum in the presidency threatened Christian existence in the Middle East, adding that Bkirki should press for the election of a new president as soon as possible.
Parliament is set to convene Monday to vote for a new head of state, but the election is likely not to be achieved in the absence of a consensus among political rivals. Five previous attempts have failed, with the last four sessions being adjourned for a lack of quorum, as March 9 parties continue a boycott of the election.
