Rifi says preparations underway to rehabilitate Tripoli

BEIRUT: Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi said Sunday that the turmoil in Tripoli had ended for good and that preparations for rehabilitating the northern city were underway.

“The security incidents in Tripoli are ended for good; we are supporting the security plan in the city with all our means and we have now reached a stage of stability and of restoring normal life,” Rifi said while meeting a delegation from the Tripoli Port Workers Syndicate.

“We are now getting ready to rehabilitate Tripoli and prove that it is a city of stability, peace, coexistence, moderation and tolerance,” he said.

Rifi said former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora had held several meetings to follow up on the issue of forming a private economic zone in Tripoli. He said the mechanism for the operation of such zone would be ready soon.

The minister, who hails from the northern city, said that the aim to the plan was to ensure growth and create employment opportunities in Tripoli, one of Lebanon’s poorest cities.
