TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Former Tripoli MP Misbah al-Ahdab Sunday defended the suspects detained or wanted over clashes in the northern city as poor, abused victims and criticized Lebanon’s judiciary.
“The judiciary should not be a tool in the hand of politicians, but it should be just,” Ahdab said in a press conference held at the Rawda CafĂ© in Tripoli.
“Is it logical to issue arrest warrants for youths in their 20s, the human backbone for Tripoli, who were lured to engage in the battles after taking advantage of their poverty and arming them and giving them money?” he said.
“Those guys are now wanted for forming a terror organization while those who incited them and pushed them to fight are free and ready to incite and fund others at any time when reigniting violence in the city is desired."
He also said arrest warrants were not issued for those protected by those now in power.
Stability was restored in Tripoli in April after the authorities enacted a security plan to end intermittent Syria-linked clashes that had plagued the city for nearly three years.
The judiciary issued hundreds of arrest warrants against those involved in the clashes, some of whom remain at large.
