Musawi: President's support for resistance must be unconditional

BEIRUT: Hezbollah MP Nawwaf Musawi reiterated Sunday his party’s call for a president who would support the resistance under any circumstances.

“We in the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc and our allies support a candidate who is loyal to the resistance, a president whom we trust to remain loyal in all circumstances and throughout all political changes,” Musawi said at a commemoration ceremony in south Lebanon.

“The resistance in Lebanon is concerned with the one who loyally supports it in its ongoing battle to free what remains occupied of the Lebanese lands and its battle for the defense of Lebanon and its sovereignty and safety and natural resources,” he said. “The resistance needs a president who would not turn against it if the balance of power changes or if developments turn against its favor.”

Hezbollah has yet to name a candidate for the presidential election to choose a successor to President Michel Sleiman, whose term ends on May 25.

In the first round of election, Hezbollah cast blank ballots, while the group and its ally, the Free Patriotic Movement, abstained from attending a second voting session, preventing a quorum form being reached.
