Dialogue still on despite Siniora diatribe: Hezbollah MP

BEIRUT: Hezbollah MP Nawwaf Musawi insisted Monday that his party is adamant on pursuing dialogue with the rival Future Movement despite the recent anti-Hezbollah diatribe by former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.

“We know that some in Lebanon are seeking to disrupt and sabotage the dialogue and prevent us from reaching (positive) results,” Musawi said, two days after Siniora, who heads the Future bloc in Parliament, accused Hezbollah of destabilizing Lebanon.

“Thus we affirm in the face of all those (parties) that we and our partners are committed to continue dialogue and are serious about achieving results that would bring the Lebanese together into a united front against our real enemies,” Musawi added, speaking at a memorial ceremony for a slain Hezbollah fighter in south Lebanon’s village of Aita Shaab.

At an event Saturday commemorating the March 14 movement's 10th anniversary, Siniora read from a manifesto the coalition's new National Council had drafted.

“Everyone knows the role of Iran and its regional arms across the Arab world, at the forefront of which is Hezbollah which is starting wars here and there,” the blue print stated. “Because of this intervention, Lebanon is no longer safe from this swelling violence. The state is no longer able to ensure the continuity of its institutions and stands incapable of finding solutions.”

The remarks infuriated MP Mohammad Raad, head of Hezbollah’s bloc in Parliament, who signaled that they put in jeopardy the dialogue between the rivals launched in December.

“We cannot understand the meaning of entering into a dialogue [with the Future Movement] while evil tongues continue to attack the resistance and its project,” Raad said.

Addressing the Future officials, he said: “Either you commit yourself to the dialogue, or let us part ways.”

In his remarks Monday, Musawi reiterated that Lebanon’s true enemies are the “Zionists and the takfiris.”

“These two (enemies) are from the same stone. They meet not only in the battlefield but also in their policies and mentality,” Musawi charged.

“Whereas, we (in Hezbollah) insist on unity and dialogue, while confronting calls for terrorism,” he added.
