BAALBEK, Lebanon: Baalbek-Hermel Governor Bashir Khodr called on fugitives hiding in the area to turn themselves into security forces, who are reportedly close to apprehending them.
Khodr warned the fugitives that they have become surrounded in a “very small circle,” and that the noose around them has tightened.
Khodr's comments came during a press conference following a meeting at Baalbek’s Governmental Serail between east Lebanon’s security officials, where the recent security plan implemented in the northern Bekaa area was evaluated.
Last month, a joint operation by the Army, Internal Security Forces and General Security was carried out in the Baalbek-Hermel governorate.
Security forces arrested more than one hundred fugitives and confiscated large amounts of drugs, weapons and stolen cars in the area, which had been traditionally associated with a lack of state security.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Internal Security Forces, State Security, Army Intelligence, General Security and Civil Defense.
In addition to the issue of fugitives, “the meeting touched on the situation in the Syrian refugee camps in the village of al-Qaa,” the governor said, adding that the tents should be relocated away from the main roads leading to the Syrian borders.
The security meeeting also discussed the poor safety conditions in Baalbek’s prison and possible ways of improving them.
The governor addressed those driving cars with illegal tinted windows and without license plates, urging them to end these violations because the authorities would not be lenient.
Khodr also added that he will do his best to make sure this year’s Baalbek Festival would be held inside the Baalbek ruins and not in any alternative location.
