TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Police arrested in Tripoli a man suspected of having links to an ISIS-inspired fugitive Monday, as the security forces’ crackdown on militants who fought the Army continues in the northern city.
The Internal Security Forces' Information Branch arrested Haitham Hallak in the Abi Samra neighborhood of Tripoli, a security source told The Daily Star.
The source said that Hallak is a fugitive suspected of having direct contact with “terrorist organizations,” and particularly with Islamist fugitive Shadi Mawlawi, whose militia attacked the Army during clashes in October of last year.
Hallak’s collaboration with Mawlawi did not stop when the latter left Tripoli to hide out in an unknown location.
The arrest came as part of the ongoing crackdown by the Lebanese Army and ISF on militants suspected of involvement in last year's clashes.
The security forces have performed many raids in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood, which used to be considered the headquarters for Mawlawi’s militia and the extremist Islamists in north Lebanon.
