BEIRUT: Lebanon’s politicians can end the presidential void without foreign intervention, Iran’s ambassador said after meeting with Kataeb party leader Amine Gemayel Monday.
“Iran has a principled and fixed stand against all intervention in Lebanese internal affairs, especially that Lebanon is able, through its political elite, parties and movements, to approach its internal challenges [independently],” Mohammad Fathali said after the meeting at Gemayel’s residence in Bekfaya.
Although Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea remains the official presidential candidate for March 14, Gemayel’s name has also been discussed as an alternative.
Lebanon has been without president since May 25, 2014, when former President Michel Sleiman left office at the end of his term.
