BEIRUT: Thieves attempted to steal three old cars in Zahle Monday but were only able to snatch the cars’ registration papers, prompting concerns that these papers could be used for terrorism purposes, security sources told The Daily Star.
The cars’ owners immediately notified internal security about the theft, which reportedly took place in the early hours Monday morning. Mobile phones have also gone missing from the cars.
Police have circulated details about the registration papers and the mobile phone numbers, underpinning fears that they might be used by would-be suicide bombers to mask their identities.
Security sources explained that the theft of car registration papers is considered a serious crime because these papers could be used on similar cars for terrorism purposes.
Older vehicles were used in the suicide car bomb attacks which rocked Lebanon in June, hitting army and security targets.
