BEIRUT: Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea Monday accused his political rivals of using MP Michel Aoun’s recent initiative to deflect responsibility from their own disruption of the presidential elections.
“To avoid blame for disrupting the presidential elections, the opponent party has used the heresy of a constitutional amendment,” Geagea said at the annual dinner for Lebanese Forces students, refering to Aoun's call for direct presidential elections by the Lebanese public.
“The timing is not suitable for such amendments, for a 100 different reasons that our ministers and MPs have attempted to explain on many occasions.”
Geagea denied that he was being stubborn regarding his candidacy for the presidency, saying that what was significant for him was that the new president “at least share some of our convictions.”
“Despite [the fact] that we have proposed a candidate and an electoral platform ... all the flexibility we have displayed, we have unfortunately not been able to conduct any presidential elections,” Geagea said.
He said there were no valid reasons preventing the elections from taking place, "our MPs can simply go to the Parliament and elect the president they want.”
Geagea also indirectly accused Aoun of disrupting the election for personal interests.
“Because of some personal illegitimate ambitions, the presidential elections were disrupted in an illegitimate way, and the disruption goes on until this very moment,” he said.
