BEIRUT: Syrians living in Lebanon continued Thursday to stream into their country’s embassy to cast ballots in the presidential election.
Drivers were urged to avoid roads leading to the Syrian Embassy in suburban Yarze after Wednesday's voting caused traffic jams.
Tens of thousands of Syrians flooded the main thoroughfare leading to their embassy to cast their ballots. Thousands of motorists were stuck in their cars in and around Beirut as traffic stretched for miles, bumper to bumper, while Syrians went to their country's embassy to vote.
The unexpectedly high voter turnout, estimated around 80,000, prompted the embassy to extend voting until midnight Thursday.
Syria’s Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim Ali said fellow countrymen who miss out on their last chance to vote would be able to cast ballots at the border on June 3.
