BEIRUT: Lebanon is the first stop on German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s regional tour that starts Thursday.
The official’s two-day visit to the country comes ahead of visits to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Steinmeier will hold talks with his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil Thursday afternoon, a follow-up to the two officials’ meeting earlier this month in Berlin. Steinmeier will also hold talks with Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
The official is accompanied by German lawmakers and two delegations, one consisting of German business representatives and a second of members of the German academia and art scene.
The German minister will also visit projects for Syrian refugees in the Bekaa Valley, gaining his first-hand impressions about the refugee situation in the country and the relief efforts undertaken.
He will be meeting with the UNHCR head of mission in Lebanon, Ninette Kelley, at the agency's registration facilities in Zahle. After this meeting, he will tour projects by Humedica and UNICEF, implemented by World Vision.
Germany has donated more than 100 million euros to international organizations providing support to Syrian refugees and host communities in Lebanon.
Steinmeier will also hand over a donation of ambulance cars to the Lebanese Red Cross from the German Red Cross.
