BEIRUT: Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai said that he would never accept a vacuum in the presidential post and that the election of a new head of state was a way out of Lebanon's crises.
“Electing a new president before May 25 is the way out of the crises we are suffering,” Rai said during his Sunday sermon.
“We cannot accept vacuum, not even for a single day,” the patriarch said.
“In case of a vacuum, let the officials bear the consequences,” Rai warned. “Everyone should be aware that a president is like a head to the body and this should come before all personal considerations.”
Lebanon has less than a week to choose a new head of state, with the possibility of a vacuum in the top Christian post shadowing the country.
