Nasrallah, Hamas figures hold talks: report

BEIRUT: Hezbollah Chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah held talks with figures in Hamas earlier this week, Al-Akhbar reported in an article published Saturday.

According to the local daily, Nasrallah held “lengthy discussions with prominent leaders in Hamas in the framework of mending ties between Hamas on one hand and Hezbollah and Iran on the other.”

The pro-Hezbollah paper also said that several meetings between Hamas and Hezbollah officials had also taken place.

Last year, Nasrallah, Ramadan Shallah, the secretary-general of Islamic Jihad, and Moussa Abu Marzouq, the deputy head of Hamas’ politburo met and agreed to end Sunni-Shiite strife in Lebanon and avoid dragging Palestinian factions in Lebanon into domestic conflicts.

The meeting came as ties between Hezbollah and Hamas deteriorated over the crisis in Syria.

While Hamas is a supporter of the rebel-led Syrian uprising, Hezbollah is one of President Bashar Assad’s main allies in the region and has engaged in battles there alongside regime troops.
