BEIRUT: Hezbollah MP Mohammad Raad said Saturday his party sought a swift presidential election free from foreign meddling, rejecting what he said were attempts to impose anti-resistance policies on the country.
“We are keen on holding the presidential election as soon as possible, without any foreign intervention, and for the next president to reflect his people’s aspirations and national choices, to preserve national unity and reinforce consensus among them,” Raad said during a ceremony in the southern village of Adloun.
Lebanon plunged into a presidential vacuum on May 25 after former President Michel Sleiman’s term ended without a successor, with candidate able to garner needed majority to win the election.
Hezbollah has said that the coming president should not “backstab the resistance,” or abandon it.
“Whoever wants to sell the country to bigger countries should look for another country. This country is committed to the resistance and the resistance gave it freedom, capability, self-sufficiency and prestige,” Raad added.
“We do not accept blackmail or to be dependent on others' policies either in administering power, economy, the oil and gas sector or in our domestic affairs,” he said.
“We do not follow anyone and we are open to everyone, whoever is in harmony with our national agenda. This is how we understand freedom, sovereignty and independence, and these are not merely slogans to be raised,” Raad said.
