Order of Engineers elections kick off in Beirut, Tripoli

BEIRUT/TRIPOLI: The Order of Engineers elections in Beirut and the north kicked off Sunday with thousands expected to cast a vote for five vacant posts in the body's council as well as its presidency.

In the northern city, 6,470 engineers are registered to vote, while there are at least 30,000 eligible in the capital.

The Beirut election pits a candidate list headed by Refaat Saad, backed by the Future Movement and other March 14 parties, against Issam Bekdash, who is supported by the March 8 alliance.

The position of the head of the Order of Engineers in Beirut rotates between Muslims and Christians. It is currently headed by Elie Bsaibes, from MP Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement. The group elects a new president and the council members every three years.

Media reports said the candidates were working on a consensus list of nominees for the vacant positions and agreed on Khaled Shehab to head the prominent professional association.

Competing in the north will be a list headed by Marios Bainy, who is running for the top post and is backed by March 14 groups, and two March 8 president hopefuls, Fouad Daher and Bassam Shaheen.
