Nasrallah: Terrorism declining, Assad gaining

BEIRUT: Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah believes the danger of terrorist attacks in Lebanon has significantly decreased and that the Syrian government is no longer at risk of being toppled, according to comments to be published in a local newspaper Monday.

“The danger of the Syrian regime falling has ended, and we have exceeded the risk of partition,” Nasrallah told As-Safir in an interview, the first part of which will be published Monday.

He also said he believed “the choice of military rule has failed,” adding that the aim of the conflict in Syria was not to create democracy and justice, or to fight corruption, but to change Syria and its stance. He cited the many international appeals for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down as evidence of this objective.

In late May last year, Secretary-General Nasrallah admitted his party was fighting in Syria alongside Assad’s regime.

According to the Hezbollah leader, most of the international community is now looking for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. Nasrallah said he expected the Russian stance to grow increasingly intransigent.

He also said he was reassured by the ongoing events around Damascus and on Syria’s northern borders. Nasrallah said that the events in Syria had previously benefitted Israel following the country’s failure in the July-August 2006 war with Lebanon, but the developments on the ground were now increasingly worrying the Jewish state.

Nasrallah said Israel was now monitoring Galilee, which sits next to the occupied Golan Heights, out of fear of attacks.

He also said Israel was growing more worried about Iran every day.

In addition, Nasrallah stressed the importance of resistance supporters sticking by each other and defending their way of life.

“We do not face a problem with our people about our participation in Syria, on the contrary, there was a group that was hesitant, but it has settled its choice with us,” he said.

“I can say that some March 14 partisans support our involvement in Syria to protect Lebanon from terrorist takfiri groups.”

Nasrallah has described the presence of radical groups in Syria as an existential threat to Lebanon and the rest of the region.

He also spoke about his opinion on the so-called Arab Spring, saying that he had heard years before the unrest began about a debate concerning the division of a number of Arab countries.
