Lebanon's new Cabinet holds first meeting

BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Cabinet held its first meeting Thursday since winning a vote of confidence in Parliament, with ministers expected to discuss a plan to resolve the growing Syria-linked violence in the northern city of Tripoli.

The plan for Tripoli, which has seen at least 20 rounds of clashes since the beginning of the Syria uprising, was drafted Wednesday by officials and is expected to be endorsed by the Cabinet.

Besides Tripoli’s deteriorating security situation, the plan addresses enhancing security measures at Lebanon’s border with Syria, in an effort to contain the fallout from the Syrian crisis.

Political sources told The Daily Star that the Cabinet might discuss items outside its agenda such as the extending the terms of the Central Bank governor’s deputies.

The Cabinet meeting was chaired by President Michel Sleiman at Baabda Palace and commenced at around 10:30 a.m. Prime Minister Tammam Salam held talks with Sleiman prior to the session.

The Cabinet won a vote of confidence in Parliament on March 20.
