Berri committee to visit Bkirki next week

BEIRUT: A parliamentary committee formed by Speaker Nabih Berri will head to Bkirki next week for talks with Cardinal Beshara Rai over the presidential election, a committee member said Thursday.

“The Development and Liberation bloc committee will visit Bkirki next Monday,” MP Yassine Jaber told the Voice of Lebanon radio station Thursday.

The MP said that the committee would not be discussing names of potential presidential candidates but “the need for lawmakers to attend the [Parliament] session to elect a president.”

Rai Tuesday urged Berri to convene a Parliament session as soon as possible in order to elect a new head of state.

Lebanon Tuesday began the two-month constitutional deadline for Parliament to elect a new president.

According to the Constitution, the speaker is to convene Parliament to elect a new president two months before the expiration of President Michel Sleiman’s six-year term on May 25.

The parliamentary committee, comprising MPs Ali Osseiran, Michel Moussa and Jaber, was formed earlier this week to work in parallel with Berri’s efforts on a suitable date for the Parliament session.

Jaber said the committee would not hold consultations with the Future Movement, saying Berri had already held talks with MP Fouad Siniora, who heads the Future parliamentary bloc.
