BEIRUT: The Future parliamentary bloc Thursday criticized Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil for ignoring Syrian violations of Lebanese territory.
The bloc was “surprised [to see] that the Foreign Ministry ignored repeated and brazen attacks and violations carried out by Syrian regime forces against Lebanese sovereignty in [several] border areas,” a statement at the end of the coalition’s weekly meeting said.
Bassil, who attended a two-day Arab summit in Kuwait that ended Wednesday, did not address Syrian violations at the Arab League meeting, but rather pushed to win support for the poorly equipped Lebanese Army and stressed the threat Syrian refugees pose to Lebanon.
The Future bloc also called for a “coherent and clear” security plan for the embattled northern city of Tripoli, which has been struck by 20 rounds of fighting linked to the Syrian crisis.
“Tripoli is being battered ... and this is threatening its stability, coexistence, economy and the lives of its residents,” the statement said.
The bloc also reiterated its demand for the deployment of Lebanese soldiers along the eastern and northern border with Syria with the support of U.N. peacekeepers.
It called on the government and all political forces to create the “appropriate atmosphere” for the upcoming presidential election.
The coalition also renewed its call for Hezbollah to withdraw its fighters from Syria “and save the lives of young Lebanese men.”
Hezbollah is fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad in his war against rebels.
