Amal Movement removes flags, banners from Beirut suburb

BEIRUT: The Amal Movement in coordination with municipal workers removed for the first time Tuesday political signs and banners from the Beirut southern district of Shiyah.

Huge Amal flags, posters of fallen party members and other party signs were torn down along the old Sidon road stretching from Mar Mikhael Church in the Galerie Semaan area near Hadath until Msharafieh.

“We removed about 80 percent of the posters and banners today from areas inhabited by diverse Lebanese and where geographical areas overlap like Shiyah - Ain al-Rummaneh,” Amal official Hajj Hani told The Daily Star.

Hani suggested that there was no need for similar measures to be adopted deep in the capital’s southern suburbs, given the alliance between the Amal Movement and Hezbollah, both Shiite parties.

The move comes weeks after the government decided to remove political signage and party banners in Beirut, Tripoli and Sidon in line with an agreement reached during dialogue sessions between the Future Movement and Hezbollah to defuse sectarian tensions.
