BEIRUT: Relations between the Progressive Socialist Party led by MP Walid Jumblatt and MP Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement are improving, Health Minister Wael Abu Faour said Friday, hoping that rapprochement between rival political groups would reflect positively on Lebanon’s security and government performance.
“MP Walid Jumblatt is keen on consulting General Aoun in all matters, especially that bilateral relations are moving positively and we are adamant on preserving and upholding (this progress),” Abu Faour said after a meeting with Aoun, also attended by Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, who belongs to the FPM.
Abu Faour said he was dispatched by Jumblatt to assure the FPM chief of the PSP's support for dialogue between Aoun and his Christian arch foe Samir Geagea of the Lebanese Forces.
“We hope that dialogue, whether between the FPM and the Lebanese Forces, or between Hezbollah and Future Movement, would lead to positive outcomes, and would at the very least result in Lebanese agreements to protect Lebanon in this phase, including presidential election,” Abu Faour said
He said he also discussed with Aoun the government’s work which is being obstructed by rivalries among ministers representing various political factions.
“I don’t think that any of us want to bring down the Cabinet. What is requested is to replace mutual disruption by mutual construction, and to agree on a system for running public affairs,” Abu Faour added.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam cut short a Cabinet meeting Thursday which turned sour over a controversial decision-making system, with rival ministers accusing each other of obstructing the work of the ministerial body.
