Lebanese Army launches fresh Bekaa Valley raids

BAALBEK, Lebanon: The Lebanese Army carried out early morning raids Friday at the homes of several men wanted on multiple warrants in the northern Bekaa Valley, confiscating quantities of drugs.

Security sources told The Daily Star the Army raided houses in Brital and Hor Taala at dawn.

It was not immediately clear whether the Army made any arrests. The sources, however, said the wanted “big shots” most likely have fled the area a while ago.

Meanwhile, policemen from the Internal Security Forces secured the entrances to the homes being raided.

By midmorning, the Army had confiscated quantities of hash and Captagon pills during raids in the Brital neighborhood of Hammoudieh and the nearby town of Hezzine.

Lebanese security forces arrested 10 individuals and confiscated 18 stolen cars in the Bekaa Valley Thursday, on the first day of a security plan launched in a region notorious for kidnappings and other crimes.

Braving a snowstorm, Army vehicles rolled into Hor Taala, Brital and surrounding villages known to shelter people involved in kidnappings for ransom, killings, drug smuggling and car thefts.

Taking part in the long awaited operation were units from the Army, Internal Security Forces and the General Security, an Army statement said.

Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk and General Security chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim were likely to visit troops in the Baalbek Friday, local media reported.
