Lebanon health minister reminds food shops of certificate deadline

BEIRUT: Minister of Health Wael Abu Faour pressed Monday on the deadline he had given to food businesses to get the necessary papers for their workers before the end of the month.

In a statement released by his office, the minister called on the establishments to obtain the required health certificates for their workers before the end of January, or else face punitive measures.

He said the certificates should be validated at Lebanon’s public hospitals, stressing that invalidated certificates will not be accepted.

Abu Faour also reiterated that employers have an obligation to register all workers of food institutions at the National Social Security Fund, in accordance with the Lebanese labor law.

The statement said the institutions who fail to adhere to the above mentioned conditions and deadline will face legal measures that could reach total closure.

It also reminded the unlicensed establishments of the other deadline in May 2015, before which they should all have obtained investment permits.

Abu Faour has been carrying out a campaign against violators of food safety standards since November, when he started naming and shaming shops and restaurants selling contaminated food.

His campaign has led to the temporary or permanent closure of hundreds of establishments from slaughterhouses to sweets shops, and has been met with wide popular support.
