BEIRUT: Health Minister Wael Abu Faour Tuesday ordered the closure of warehouses and refrigerators at Beirut's airport, citing poor hygiene and expired food items during an inspection.
“The minute you walk into the warehouses, you feel like you entered a dump,” Abu Faour said after inspecting the airport along with Transport Minister Ghazi Zeaiter.
“What country is this in which meat and fish are mixed with medicine and trash?” he lamented.
Abu Faour said all of the medications would be confiscated along with the food items.
He referred the case to the judiciary.
The health minister revealed that some of food products still in storage had expired nearly 20 years ago.
"Dates on some foods showed they had expired in 1995," he said.
Abu Faour’s move was part of his ongoing crackdown on food and drug safety violations.
