Army enters Bab al-Tabbaneh, bearing gifts

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Military fatigues adorned the tattered streets of Bab al-Tabbaneh Monday, as the Lebanese Army handed out wool blankets to area residents affected by the latest military offensive in north Lebanon.

In coordination with the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation, the Army distributed 2,000 wool blankets, two for each family.

Army Brig. Saeed al-Riz, Brig. Gen. Yacoub Mouawad and the head of the civil-military cooperation department, Col. Samir Musharraf, oversaw the distribution.

During the tour, Musharraf stressed that the campaign was carried out under the directive of military command and in collaboration with unidentified donors.

The cooperation department chief noted that efforts would focus on areas that were ravaged by four days of fierce battles that pitted the Lebanese Army against militants across north Lebanon.

“The campaign gave preference to affected and remote areas or those that suffer from difficult situations,” he told area residents.

Musharraf noted that Tuesday’s donations were not the first of their kind, pointing to a similar initiative taken two weeks ago, whereby the Army distributed a large number of the jackets to students in Bab al-Tabbaneh and the neighboring neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen.

The Army has also distributed books and stories for libraries in the border-region of Wadi Khaled, he said, highlighting that the efforts serve to “strengthen relations between the Army and the people.”
