No parliamentary poll without president: Berri

BEIRUT: Parliamentary elections should not take place without the participation of all parties and as long political and sectarian tensions persist, Speaker Nabih Berri said in remarks published Wednesday.

Berri was quoted by visitors as saying that he was against an extension of Parliament's mandate, but that elections should only be held if major blocs promise not to boycott them, and after the election of a new presdient.

“It’s not Nabih Berri who abandons the Constitution,” he said. “As I have said, I’m not with elections, particularly in light of a climate of a Sunni-Shiite strife in the region.”

“It’s not Nabih Berri who fuels strife,” he added.

Berri had previously said that he stands with the Future Movement in its rejection of elections without a president.

Lebanon has been without a president since Michel Sleiman's term ended in May.
