Army arrests suspect in Arsal clashes

BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army Thursday arrested a suspect wanted for killing a Lebanese soldier during a militant assault on the northeastern border town of Arsal in August, security sources said.

The accused, Ibrahim Issa, was found near an Army checkpoint in Arsal in possession of a fake passport.

Unconfirmed reports have said that Issa is of Syrian nationality.

Nineteen soldiers were killed during clashes between the Lebanese Army and militants from the Nusra Front and ISIS in the northeastern border town of Arsal at the beginning of August. After briefly seizing the border town, the militants withdrew with more than 30 policemen and soldiers as captives, 27 of whom remain in captivity.
