BEIRUT: Economy Minister Alain Hakim Tuesday said Kataeb ministers would challenge a recent Cabinet decision to resume the installation of high-voltage lines in the Metn region.
“The decision to continue the implementation of high-voltage lines in Mansourieh, as per the Cabinet’s recent session without the approval of Kataeb ministers, is an illegal decision and will be confronted with all available means including the submission of a challenge,” Hakim said in a statement.
“The work mechanism that the Cabinet agreed to abide by required the signatures of all ministers before passing any item,” he added, referring to the governing mechanism established by the government during the presidential vacuum.
Cabinet came to an agreement last Thursday to resume the committee’s work, which included offering to buy the homes of residents who opposed the project based on health concerns, something residents have taken issue with.
The residents of Mount Lebanon’s Metn district oppose the work of the committee. They have prevented Energy Ministry workers from installing high voltage lines, calling on the government to put them underground instead.
On Sunday, residents of Mansourieh and Ain Saade released a statement, rejecting the Cabinet's decision and warning that they would confront efforts to install the high-voltage cables.
