Salam kicks off visit to Kuwait

BEIRUT: Prime Minister Tammam Salam Sunday announced that he will call for a Cabinet session on Thursday, revealing that some problematic issues regarding the work of his government in light of the presidential void have been solved.

Salam spoke to reporters on the plane that took him to Kuwait. The premiere and accompanying delegation were welcomed Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber al-Mubarak al-Sabbah and other Kuwaiti officials, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Salam later on headed for talks with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabbah al-Ahmad al-Sabbah.

Sources close to Salam had told The Daily Star that the lightning one-day visit was aimed to encourage Arab tourists to come to Lebanon.

Shortly after Salam landed in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates issued a travel advisory calling on Emirati nationals to avoid traveling to Lebanon and asking nationals currently residing there to immediately leave the country in light of the precarious security situation.

Lebanon's tourism industry, which is one of the biggest sectors in the country, has suffered over the past three years. Spillover from the Syrian civil war, including a series of bombings in Beirut in the last year, led several Gulf countries to issue travel advisories warning against visiting Lebanon.

After a period of relative calm since the formation of the Salam government, terror struck Lebanon again on Friday when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a police checkpoint on the Beirut-Damascus highway, killing one police officer and wounding 33 people, again heightening fears of violent spillover from Syria and Iraq.
