BEIRUT: Facebook has closed down a page promoting Syrian refugee brides after receiving reports that the page was abusive, however, a similar page popped up shortly after.
Another page under the same title, “Syrian refugees for marriage,” with unidentified administrators was created, gaining over 6,000 likes in less than 24 hours.
The original page showed photos of women under the description “Syrian refugees for marriage in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Yemen, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates.”
The page said it aimed to help Arab men marry Syrian women who had fled their war-torn country. It offered different kinds of legal and secret marriages and said it would later publish lists of the names of the refugees and their places of residence.
Activists were angered by the page and reported it to Facebook. The Lebanese women's rights organization KAFA (Enough Violence and Exploitation) called the page “insulting,” asking Facebook users to report it.
Meanwhile, the new page is promoting itself in a religious way. It has a verse from the Quran in its background photo and said that once the real work started, sheikhs would be involved in contacting the potential grooms for coordination.
The group said the marriages should be formed under legitimate marriage contracts and for “financially well-off men.”
Activists are campaigning against the new group, asking Facebook to close it.
