BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army arrested 25 Lebanese and non-Lebanese individuals Wednesday, days after ethnic tensions boiled over in Burj Hammoud after a Lebanese citizen was knocked unconscious by a Syrian Kurdish man.
A military statement issued Thursday said the arrests were made in Beirut’s northeastern suburb of Burj Hammoud and Dora Wednesday.
The Army said the men of various nationalities were apprehended either for traveling without IDs or for committing offenses.
The statement said the detainees were referred to the relevant authorities.
Tensions ran high in Burj Hammoud over the weekend after a catcalling incident spiraled out of control prompting security forces to step in to contain frictions.
The brawl escalated Saturday after a Syrian Kurdish man knocked Lebanese citizen Elis Kalash unconscious by throwing a gas canister at him.
