BEIRUT: MP Ali Bazzi said Sunday that Speaker Nabih Berri was exercising his prerogative to have a Lebanon-made presidential election.
“Speaker Berri is performing his duties on all levels regarding the presidential election,” Bazzi said in a ceremony in Nabatieh where he represented the speaker.
“We are exercising our duty and prerogative to elect a made-in-Lebanon president,” he added, noting that he looked forward to filling the Lebanese state’s top Christian position within the constitutional deadline.
“The Lebanese and the Arabs know very well that Speaker Berri has not spared any effort ... to complete this election within the deadline, so let's try and have a Lebanese-made president without anyone waiting for the deadline to pass and call upon foreigners to choose our president,” he said.
Berri has held three Parliament sessions to elect a new president, with the last two failing to convene for a lack of quorum. The speaker has called for another session Thursday, though it appears destined to a similar fate as the previous ones.
With no candidate capable of garnering needed majority and the absence of an agreement on a single nominee, the likelihood of a presidential vacuum has grown with President Michel Sleiman's term ending in two weeks, on May 25.
