BEIRUT: Police detained a Syrian man, along with his wife, the mother of an abandoned newborn found last week in the southern town of Qana, a police statement said Sunday.
The Syrian couple, identified by their two initials H.H. and B.A., were detained by the police in south Lebanon after investigations into the case, the statement said. The newborn was found Friday in Qana at the side of a road.
According to the statement, the man isn't the biological father of the baby girl and he had told his wife that her newborn was dead after the delivery. He then left the infant on the side of the road because he did not want to raise her.
The police said the mother had been released while her husband remained in custody.
Last week, media reports said a newborn was found in Qana wearing a hospital ID-bracelet with the name of the mother, Hajr Halabi.
