TRIPOLI, Lebanon: The Lebanese Army lost one of its own over the weekend as deadly clashes between pro and anti-Assad fighters in the northern city of Tripoli raged unabated overnight Sunday.
The loss of the soldier raised the death toll to 11 since clashes erupted late Thursday between fighters in the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
In a terse statement Saturday, the Army said that at around 9.30 p.m. unidentified gunmen fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a military transport in Malloula, leading to the death of a soldier.
Hours earlier, Mohammad Nhayleh, a man accused of targeting the Army in February, was shot and killed in the city’s vegetable market, the source said.
Nhayleh was accused of firing an RPG at the military in the last round of clashes between fighters in the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, the source added.
Militants from Bab al-Tabbaneh, a predominantly-Sunni neighborhood known for its support for the armed Syrian opposition, have engaged in multiple rounds of fighting with Alawite fighters from Jabal Mohsen, which enjoys strong links to the Syrian regime.
