BEIRUT: The Lebanese Forces bloc said Saturday that the policy statement of the new government should prioritize security and the economy.
“The ministerial statement should be a starting point and an indication of the plan to be adopted by the Cabinet [to address challenges facing the country],” the LF said in a statement issued after a meeting chaired by LF leader Samir Geagea.
The LF also reiterated its call for Hezbollah to withdraw from Syria in order to spare Lebanon the repercussions.
“What should be done to get out of this cycle of violence is the withdrawal of Hezbollah from Syria, controlling the Lebanese border in both directions, and deploying the Lebanese Army along the border... as well as ending the presence of Palestinian weapons outside refugee camps,” the statement said.
“These steps are ... a way out of the security turmoil and economic paralysis,” it added,
They said that changing the faces of ministers is not enough, but that change must be reflected in the policy statement and the government's work.
The LF also stressed the necessity of referring to the Baabda Declaration and the Bkirki Charter when drafting the ministerial statement.
The Baabda Declaration affirms Lebanon’s neutrality toward regional conflicts, especially the war in Syria, while the National Charter unveiled by the Maronite Church earlier this month calls for holding the presidential elections on time and urges political rivals to place national interests above personal ones.
