Tripoli residents protest poor road conditions

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: The residents of Tripoli’s Abi Samra neighborhood blocked the roads in the area for several house Saturday to protest the government's failure to fix the pothole-plagued streets.

Using large stones, garbage containers and their vehicles, the protesters blocked the roads connecting Abi Samra to Zghorta and Dahr al-Ain near Tripoli.

They called on the northern city’s municipality to fix the roads in their neighborhood, threatening to escalate their protest until their demands are met.

Lebanon's second most populous city, Tripoli is one of the poorest areas of the country.

A U.N.-sponsored study earlier this year revealed that 57 percent of Tripoli’s families were struggling to attain an acceptable standard of living, and among them 26 percent were classified as “extremely deprived.”
