BEIRUT: Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi commanded Lebanon’s judiciary Saturday to find those responsible for the intense gunfire that accompanied Future Movement leader Saad Hariri’s speech in Beirut.
Rifi asked State Prosecutor Samir Hammoud to prosecute the shooters, who celebrated Hariri’s surprise visit with several bursts of gunfire that could be heard across the capital.
Hariri arrived in Beirut without notice Saturday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his father's, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, assassination.
The celebratory gunfire accompanied Hariri’s speech, which he gave in front of a large crowd of politicians, officials and supporters in BIEL, Downtown Beirut.
Hariri has been in a self-imposed exile in Paris since 2012 over security concerns. His last visit to Lebanon followed deadly clashes between the Army and jihadi militants in northeast Lebanon last August.
Rifi is a member of the March 14 bloc and affiliated with the Future Movement.
