Arrest warrants issued for 12 over Yves Nawfal killing

BEIRUT: Lebanon’s judiciary issued Wednesday arrest warrants against 12 people suspected of involvement in the killing of pub goer Yves Nawfal.

First Investigative Judge of Mount Lebanon Jean Fernayni issued six arrest warrants against suspects already in custody and six more against suspects yet to be aprehended, a judicial source told The Daily Star.

Among those already in custory are Charbel Khalil and Juliano Saadeh, who had been identified as the main suspects behind the crime.

In a video shared on social media before Khalil and Saadeh's arrest last week, the two were seen standing in front of the Kfar Debian police station, near the crime scene, announcing that they would hand themselves in.

In the video, they also claimed that their intention was not to kill Nawfal, and said they did not know him in person.

The crime took place earlier this month when Nawfal was celebrating his birthday at a pub in Kfar Debian.

The incident started out as a fistfight between Nawfal and a group of men over an offhand comment made to a woman.

Nawfal’s lead attacker, Khalil, became aggravated after he was hit with a loose jab. Khalil then ordered his friends not to let Nawfal get to Beirut alive, the pub owner had earlier told The Daily Star.

Armed with a pistol and an automatic rifle, the attackers sprayed Nawfal's Subaru with bullets, killing him.
