Army detains 12 in Beirut apartment raid



BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army announced Wednesday that it had arrested a group of 12 people in a raid on a Beirut area apartment, confiscating firearms and drugs.


In a statement, the Army said is also arrested man in Beirut's southern suburbs suspected of shooting at troops in east Lebanon last month.


The Army said it raided a building in the eastern Beirut suburb of Dikwaneh Tuesday night, arresting six Syrian nationals, four Bengalis, one Iraqi and one Lebanese.


Soldiers discovered a number of “personal guns, ammunition, drugs and stolen items.”


Separately, the Army said it arrested a man at a checkpoint in the Haret Hreik neighborhood of Beirut’s southern suburbs Lebanese national Haidar al-Masri, who had been on the run for allegedly shooting at troops in east Lebanon last month.


The statement said that Haidar participated in a round of shooting that wounded an Army soldier and a civilian in the Baalbek area village of Majdaloun.
