Ministry limits over 60 jobs to Lebanese

BEIRUT: Labor Minister Sejaan Azzi issued Tuesday a decision outlining the professions confined solely to Lebanese nationals, with certain exceptions applicable.

According to a statement released by the Labor Ministry, the decision comes at a time when the Lebanese workforce is witnessing fierce competition. The decision also seeks to show the key role that the Labor Ministry plays in protecting the Lebanese work force as well as local employers and institutions, the statement added.

At least 62 professions have been confined to Lebanese nationals.

The restrictions apply to jobs in the following sectors: administrative, banking, insurance, education, pharmaceuticals, technical professions, trade, finance, engineering, printing and publishing, medicine, law and auto repairs, among others.

Palestinians born on Lebanese territory, who are officially registered in the Interior Ministry and are listed in municipal records, are generally not subject to the restrictions, except with regards to free contractors and other professions legally prohibited for non-Lebanese.

Syrian workers working in agriculture, hygiene and construction sectors are also not subject to the restrictions in the three sectors named above.

The minister has also reserved exceptions for some foreigners such as a manager or a representative of a foreign company registered in Lebanon, a foreigner who has been a resident of Lebanon since birth and a person of Lebanese origin or born of a Lebanese mother.
