ISIS releases video claiming new defection from Lebanese Army

BEIRUT: ISIS has released a video claiming that a fourth Lebanese soldier has defected from the military, the second one in a week to reportedly have joined the extremist group that is battling the Army along the eastern border.

In a video released by ISIS Monday, Sgt. Abdul-Monem Mahmoud Khaled announced he had defected from the Army to join the jihadists.

“I announce my defection from the Crusader, sectarian Army to join the Islamic state, the caliphate state,” Khaled said.

He was clad in his Lebanese Army military uniform and wearing the black flag of jihad as a bandana on his head.

In the video, Khaled shows his military I.D. card, which says he is from the northern Akkar town of Adweh.

The National New Agency said that Khaled had deserted the Army four months ago.

Khaled is the fourth alleged defection in the last week.

ISIS released a video Saturday night showing a soldier named Abdul-Qader Akoumi, who supposedly defected to the terrorist group.

A similar video released by Nusra Front over the weekend claimed that Mohammad Antar, a soldier from Fnaydeq, north Lebanon, had joined the group’s ranks.

Last week, soldier Abdallah Shehadeh from the northern city of Tripoli, also reportedly joined Nusra.
