EDL workers threaten to kill themselves at protest

BEIRUT: Two contract electricity workers threatened to take their own lives Monday, demanding their August paychecks as well as education incentives.

The state-run National News Agency said one protester slashed himself with a knife outside Electricite du Liban's headquarters in Mar Mikhael, while another poured gasoline over his body and threatened self-immolation.

The strikers were also protesting EDL’s decision to lay off five workers from Jezzine, south Lebanon.

These latest incidents come during an ongoing strike by EDL contract workers that was launched at the end of July, in protest of the state-run company's decision not to offer full-time employment to all of the close to 2,000 contract workers.

The open-ended strike has had consequences for the Lebanese public, with chronic power outages rising from their usual three hours daily to over 12 hours in parts of the country.
