BEIRUT: Head of General Labor Confederation (GLC) Ghassan Ghosn said the union will escalate action after Ramadan and Eid el Fitr to press for the salary scale adjustment and other long-pending livelihood files, the National News Agency (NNA) reported Monday.
Speaking at an iftar Sunday, Ghosn said “all democratic means” will be used to achieve workers’ demands.
He warned against ignoring people’s interests, dismissing MPs failure to elect a president of the republic as a non-starter for not resolving problems affecting people’s daily life, including reforming the salary scale for public employees.
“The republic is not eliminated if a president is not elected although he is a pillar of the state, the government has no excuse to retire from dealing with the people’s affairs, and parliamentarians are duty-bound to carry out their legislative tasks for the sake of the people they represent,” Ghosn said.
The union leader deplored politicians’ blatant indifference to the problems of daily life facing the average citizen.
“Those in charge of the country are not moved by the lack of electricity and water or by the fact that people are living in darkness and without water ... All they care about is funding the treasury under the pretext of covering the cost of salary scale,” he said.
Ghosn also warned against “dire consequences” from the exacerbating political crisis which he said “is much worse than in the darkest days of Lebanon’s past wars.”
“The situation has reached the deepest bottom of the drain, and consequences will be uglier than ever before,” Ghosn cautioned.
Rival politicians have been unable to agree on an adjustment of the wages scale so far, increasing public frustration and recriminations which have nonetheless tapered since Ramadan started in late June.
